BATHINDA (Punjab): Activists of farmers' body BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) and farm labourers' outfit Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union went to the office of Bathinda deputy commissioner and submitted the list of 99 peasants, who had committed suicide in the district in 18 months between April 1, 2013 and September 30, 2014. Families of suicide victims also assembled at Bathinda district administrative complex on Monday and sought a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each, as promised by the state government.

"As per our survey, 99 suicides have taken place in Bathinda in the past 18 months. We forwarded the representation from all suicide-hit families for compensation to the district administration. We want immediate disbursal of compensation to these families," said BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokri Kalan.

Bathinda additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Sumit Kumar met activists and sought two days to decide the cases. He said, "The administration has sought two days to settle the compensation issue. It will be dealt accordingly."

In September 2013, the government had ordered the DCs to immediately disburse financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of farmers who had committed suicide after verifying the facts. Revenue and rehabilitation department on September 30, 2013 asked three universities of Punjab to conduct a survey to tabulate suicides by farmers till March 31, 2013. The survey could not be conducted for want of funds as Punjab government had failed to provide funds to the universities for the same.

"Though Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana; Punjabi University, Patiala and Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar had counted 4,800 suicides, as per our findings, more than 30,000 farmers and farm labourers have killed themselves in the last over two decades in the state. The government has preferred not to record most of the farm suicides and has concealed facts about these," said Sukhdev Singh and Khet Mazdoor Union secretary Lachhman Sewewala.
