Till Tuesday, Jayanti Patel, 46, was farming to earn a living, having secured bail. On Wednesday, he worried not only about his mother, wife and children but also about his father, elderly and ailing, who has been sentenced to life with him.

Jayanti and his his father Mangal Patel, a paralytic, are among the 31 sentenced to life. So were at least three of their relatives, Amrat Somabhai, Bhikha Joitabhai and Kalabhai Bhikhabhai Patel.

The father and son, who own 15 bighas of land between them, had a case filed against them by Ismail Shaikh, who worked on their farm and lost 11 members of his family, including his brother, sister-in-law and their children.

Jayanti is the only son of Mangal Patel, who has had facial paralysis and can barely walk. “It will be bad for him in jail,” said the son. In his defence, he said , “I was guarding my potato crop from stray pigs the night the incident happened.”

At home are Jayanti’s mother Kamlaben, suffering from asthma, wife Gitaben and their daughter Rinkal, who is in Class X. Son Hardik, who is in Class XII, was in court and broke down when the sentence was pronounced. “The verdict is completely wrong. We grew up with the children of our Muslim neighbours,” he said. “I will have to now support the family and work in the fields. We have not yet told my mother and grandmother — they will be shattered.”

Dineshbhai Patel too broke down when his brother Bhikha, eldest of three, was found guilty and sentenced. “We came in the morning thinking that it was just a matter of one day. My brother was asleep and innocent, but was arrested on the third day,” he said.

Many had begun the day with hope. Mukesh Patel, 22, saw a brother and an uncle acquitted, but another brother and their father Dahyabhai Patel will go to jail. Mukesh is supporting his mother; he has a small piece of land and a spectacles shop in Mehsana.
