Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): Many a fear has been expressed over the potential misuse of the Aadhaar card, ranging from privacy violation to online looting to suppression of dissent.

Now, a headmaster in Uttar Pradesh has been accused of opening an unforeseen flank by showing the door to 17 pupils on the pretext that they hadn't submitted their Aadhaar numbers.

Rajesh Kumar, the headmaster of the government-run Laltapur Primary School in Chandauli district, said he had sought the Aadhaar numbers to stop pupils attending multiple schools for an extra midday meal to take home. He said he had only threatened to deregister defaulters but hadn't actually done it.

Half the families that send their children to the school live below the poverty line.

The parents of the 17 have complained in an email to chief minister Yogi Adityanath that Kumar had told them on Friday that their children had been expelled for failing to submit their Aadhaar numbers.

They added that the "real reason" for the alleged expulsions was that the pupils had asked Kumar "why classes were not running regularly". The 17 children - students of Classes I to V and aged 5 to 10 -- didn't come to Kumar's school on Saturday.

While the state government has directed all pupils eligible for the midday meals, served up to Class VIII, to deposit their Aadhaar numbers with their schools, it has not threatened to expel defaulters.

District basic education officer Bholendra Pratap Singh told The Telegraph he would act against Kumar, for "whatever he had told the students was wrong".
