About 2% of state's grazing land under encroachment: Maharashtra govt tells Bombay HC -Vidya

-India Today The Maharashtra government informed the Bombay High Court that 2.23 per cent of four lakh hectares of grazing land in the state are under encroachment. In Short: * About 2.23 per cent of the total grazing land in Maharashtra is under encroachment * 24,513 encroachments have been removed from July 12, 2011 to September 15, 2022 * Bombay HC court asked the state govt what steps will it take to remove the encroachments The Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court that out of 4.52 lakh hectares of government land used as 'gairan' land (open spaces used for grazing of cattle) in the entire state, around 2.23 per cent was under encroachment. Ramesh Chavan, Joint secretary of Revenue and Forest department, informed the court by filing an affidavit in a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) initiated by the court against unauthorised encroachments on the lands. The affidavit stated that in compliance with a Supreme Court (SC) order, a government resolution had been issued by the cabinet in July 2011 imposing restrictions on use of the land designated as 'gairan' and for removing encroachments on it.
