NEW DELHI: Lawyers and activists have condemned the union government for defaulting on the deadline to frame rules to regulate acid attacks. With the Supreme Court granting the government a fresh four month extension on Tuesday, activists called for an end to systemic "lethargy" and "insensitivity" on crimes against women.

Alok Dixit, who runs a campaign called Stop Acid Attacks, isn't optimistic about the extended deadline. "This isn't the first time that the government has defaulted on a deadline. In February too, the Center was asked to convene a meeting to frame a policy on acid attacks. They missed that deadline as well," says Dixit, who is now planning to write to the union home minister regarding the delay and the lack of a clear policy.

Supreme Court lawyer Kamlesh Jain, who has represented acid attack survivors, blames the government for its insensitivity in dealing with issues where women are victimized. "Most women affected in acid attacks cases come from lower income groups. They are ignored by the authorities. There is utter callousness on the part of the government," says Jain.

Activist Ranjana Kumari also spoke about a systemic failure in dealing with crimes against women. "There was supposed to be state consultation and training sessions on domestic violence which has not yet happened. There is no coordination or prioritization on these issues," says Kumari.
