Over 500 people under the banner of All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam (Aasaa) staged a four-hour dharna in the Lastgate area of Dispur on Thursday seeking an immediate halt to illegal eviction in the Lungsung forest area of Kokrajhar district.

Shouting slogans like "stop illegal eviction in Lungsung" and "give us justice", the protesters alleged that the Congress-led government in the state has deprived them of the basic needs. "The government has deprived our people in the state," said Joseph Minz, the general secretary of Aasaa.

The students' organization said 6,919 people were displaced by the alleged illegal eviction in 59 villages of the Lungsung forest area of Kokrajhar district in lower Assam. Among them, 3,646 are females.

The leaders of the organisation said the government should provide compensation, relief and rehabilitation to the affected families and stop eviction at Lungsung. The protesters demanded a CBI enquiry into the eviction. They said they won't stop their fight until the government recognises the Adivasi community as Scheduled Tribe. "No ST, no rest," said one of the leaders.

The Aasa also demanded their recognition as a Scheduled Tribe as their forefathers in Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh are already in the ST list. At the same time, the students mentioned in their memorandum to chief minister Tarun Gogoi that recognizion of Adivasis as STs will solve 80 per cent of their problems.
