Even as the coal crisis continues in the country, a urea shortage seems to be the next big problem for several states, especially with the sowing of rabi (winter) crops around the corner.

Bhopal /Jaipur /Guwahati /Chandigarh: The coal supply shortage has already threatened possible power outages in India. Several states have reported a shortage and complained of a possible power outage in the coming days, even as the central government has assured that there is no coal shortage.

Farmers from states such as Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are angry over the crisis, with some resorting to protests and blocking national highways.

The Centre recently approved an additional fertiliser subsidy of Rs 28,655 crore for the rabi or winter planting season. On Tuesday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the new nutrient-based subsidy rates for phosphatic and potassic fertilisers.

The subsidy is paid to fertiliser companies as compensation for selling their products to farmers below market prices.

Given the shortage of urea, the most important nitrogenous fertiliser in the market, India Today checks the situation on the ground.
