Over 1,500 people comprising farmers, residents and activists who have been affected by the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor Project around Bangalore, began their journey to the national capital from the City Railway Station on Sunday afternoon to voice their protest. For many, it is their first trip to New Delhi, and as a group, they felt they had a lot of opportunities to exchange ideas and develop bonds. Janata Dal (Secular) chief H.D. Deve Gowda and former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy saw them off at the station.

Fully prepared

The affected farmers have come fully prepared for the protest. “Each one of us is carrying documents relating to the lands we are losing. We will expose the fraud played on us,” said Nanjudappa, a farmer from Hemmigepura village who is one among the many persons losing land for the project.

The Janata Dal (S) has booked an entire train comprising 20 second-class sleeper coaches and two pantry cars for the week-long return journey on Full Tariff Rates. It has paid a Rs. 10.5-lakh advance to the Railways. While normal trains, for example the Karnataka Express, take nearly 40 hours to reach New Delhi, this train will take over 43 hours.

While this train will get priority over goods trains, it will not be given priority over regular passenger trains, said G.M. Pattar, Chief Passenger Traffic Manager, South Western Railway.

Unlike many north Indian places where hundreds of people intending to participate in protests just barge into regular trains disrupting passengers, this arrangement is appreciable, said Praveen Pande, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, South Western Railway, Bangalore Division.
