The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today demanded a CBI inquiry into the alleged Rs 10,000-crore financial scam in the field of Public Distribution System (PDS) in Assam during the tenure of Congress-led State Government.

Criticizing the State Government for its failure to strengthen the PDS system in the State, the party said that the essential commodities meant for the BPL and APL families of the State are being sold in the black-market.

Referring to a report prepare by the National Council for Applied Economic Research, 2008, AGP leader Chandra Mohan Patowary told the media that Assam tops the list of States indulged in PDS scams.

“According to the report prepared by the Council, 44.97 per cent of the 475 thousand metric ton rice supplied on subsidized rates by the Union Government for the BPL families of Assam has been sold out in the black-market.

“Similarly, 83.28 per cent of the 392 thousand MT rice and cent per cent of the 235 thousand MT wheat for the people living above poverty line (APL) did not reach the targeted population. Similar is the case with other subsidized items like sugar, kerosene and salt,” Patowary said.

The AGP leader further alleged that in the ten years of its rule, the Congress-led State government has been indulged in a PDS scam worth around Rs 10,000 crore. The party has also written to the Prime Minister drawing his attention towards this issue.

Targeting the Chief Minister’s Anna Suraksha Yojana, Patowary said that the scheme is nothing but an election gimmick. “Every BPL family in Assam is entitled to get 35 kg rice at the rate of Rs 6.50 per kg, whereas the Anna Suraksha Yojana promises to give 10 kg rice at the rate of Rs 6 per kg, which is an attempt by the State government to cover-up its failure to provide the BPL families their due rights,” he added.

The AGP president also mentioned that during its tenure, the AGP-government ensured the distribution of 35 kg rice to the BLP families per month through the BPL cards, which was discontinued during the Congress rule.

“Like the neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, a CBI inquiry should be conducted in Assam also, to punish the persons responsible for such large-scale PDS scam,” he said.
