Jaipur: Keeping in view the possibility of poor monsoon this year, the state agriculture department has submitted a contingency crop plan - Kharif 2014 -to the disaster and relief department.

In the plan, the agriculture department has suggested that through proper technical guidance to farmers loss in agricultural production could be curbed in case of weak or non-uniform monsoon in the state.

The department has given various suggestions including ways to maintain moisture in the fields, use of compost or vermin-compost fertilizers once in three years in the fields, use of drip and fountain irrigation system, proper selection of crops keeping in mind the soil quality and rainfall, and use of certified and improved variety of seeds.

In case of timely rainfall (first fortnight of July), the department has suggested to sow bajra, jwar, makka, groundnut, soyabean and gwar. In case of delay in monsoon (after July 15) crops with short ripening period such as bajra and jwar should be sown, the department suggested.

In case of rains after July 25, the farmers have been advised to sow pulses and oil seeds instead of food grains.

If the duration between two rains is long, farmers having irrigation facility should irrigate their fields, in case the crops suffer damage due to drought, it should be used as fodder, if it rains heavily after a long gap, farmers should adopt means to protect moisture in the fields, which will help during the rabi season were other suggestions made by the department.

The department has also suggested ways to deal with fodder crisis. In case of weak monsoon or drought, tree leaves, vegetables and fruits could be used as fodder for cattle. In the areas with availability of water such as Indira Gandhi Nahar Pariyojana (IGNP), camps could be organised for the
cattle.

It may be recalled here that chief secretary Rajiv Mehrishi had on June 12 directed the officials of various departments including agriculture, public health and engineering, food and civil supply, power, disaster and relief, panchayati raj and rural development to prepare a contingency plan keeping in view the forecast of Meteorological department, which predicts a weak monsoon this year.
