Chandigarh: Call it fear of social ostracism, or lack of belief in law and order machinery, more and more reports of sexual assault victims trying to kill self are coming to light in Haryana.

In the last four months, at least six such cases have been reported where the victims of sexual harassment, including molestation, stalking and rape, have attempted suicide.

In the most recent incident, a Karnal based woman Thursday attempted suicide after she failed to get justice on her complaint alleging domestic violence against her husband. For the last over three weeks, she had been running from pillar to post seeking action against her husband who allegedly used to maltreat her. On the other hand, her husband has also filed a counter-complaint against her alleging cheating. Since the Karnal police took a lot of time in investigating both the complaints, the woman attempted suicide. Now, she has a criminal case registered against her.

Similarly, a 26-year-old rape victim allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison in Jhajjar district's Bahadurgarh. On her complaint, police had booked Neeraj, a resident of Chhikkara colony, Jhajjar, but failed to make any substantial headway in the case. She finally attempted suicide and landed in Rohtak's PGIMS.

On January 12, a Sonepat-based Dalit girl had attempted suicide by pouring kerosene oil on her and immolating self. She was allegedly gangraped by two persons. She kept on battling for life in Rohtak's PGIMS for over a week and finally succumbed to injuries.

On March 17, a class ninth student of Hisar attempted suicide by consuming poison after she was harassed by two youngsters for over two months. The accused used to pass lewd comments at her and kept on stalking her despite her resistance.

Even last year, a glaring case of a Dalit rape victim immolating self in Jind district's Sachhakhera village had hit the national headlines forcing the Congress president Sonia Gandhi to visit the victim's family.

Sources said, Haryana Police's initiative of launching various helplines and women PCRs have made some impact in curbing the instances of sexual assaults and rapes, but the recent trend of suicide attempts by victims indicate that the state needs to do much more.

The Haryana government has now decided to set up "One Stop Crisis Centres" (OSCC) in Civil Hospitals located in a few cities across the State. To start with such centres shall be set up in Faridabad and Gurgaon as these cities have a population of more than five lakh. At these centres, the state government not only plans to provide medical facility, but also other support services like legal aid, police services and counselling under one roof to women victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
