The State Government today told the Orissa High Court that allegations of farmers’ suicide due to crop loss are not true.

As per an earlier direction by a division bench of the High Court comprising Justices IM Quddusi and Sanju Panda, State Government submitted its counter to the writ petition filed by Jati Pradhan, secretary to Balangir Zilla Krushak Mahasangha who had alleged farmer suicides in different parts of Orissa.

In its reply, the Government cited specific cases raised by the petitioner.

The petitioner alleged farmer suicides in 35 cases by highlighting the newspaper reports but made mention of two instances, the Government said.

Akrur Sahu, who belonged to Jangimunda gram panchayat under Patnagarh block of Balangir, had committed suicide along with his two teenage daughters in 2007.

The Government said, police investigation found that Akrur had a fight with his wife over purchase of new clothes and for celebration of ‘sudasha brata,’ an Oriya festival on April 26, 2007. Enraged, he ended his life along with his daughters by consuming phosphorus which was kept at a thatched house near their agriculture field.

This was also the outcome of the inquiry made by Director of Agriculture who found that suicide was not due to agriculture reasons, it added in its reply.

The allegation that suicide was due to failure of cotton crops and shortage of funds and loan burden is not correct, the counter filed by the Government said.

The suicide by another farmer Gangadhar Mirdha of Sambalpur’s Jujumara block is still under investigation.

“The allegations of suicide of 35 farmers is based on media reports having no evidence and the petitioner should be directed to give specific instance,’’ the Government said.

The Government also detailed different measures taken to give a boost to agriculture in the State.
