Even while acting swiftly to ensure that minor married girls are not denied an opportunity to pursue education, officials see it as a contentious topic requiring a wider debate.

The practice of giving girls in marriage at an early age, especially within the family, prevails among certain communities in rural pockets of Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to The Hindu on Friday, Chief Educational Officer S. Nagaraja Murugan said that the issue of permitting such minors to continue studies in school required a national debate.

“While some are of the opinion that such children should not be denied education, there is a parallel view among many that allowing child brides to continue in schools will amount to encouraging child marriage and send a wrong signal to society. We need more clarity on this issue.”

Mr. Murugan said that immediately after the news report was published, Madurai Collector Anshul Mishra sent a stern warning to all temples, marriage halls and wedding invitation printers to insist on the brides’ age proof before offering their services. He prevented a few under-age marriages and warned even the guests of child marriage ceremonies of prosecution if they failed to inform the police and district administration of such marriages.

The action was not confined to Madurai alone as the Collectors of Virudhunagar, Coimbatore, Namakkal and other districts too prevented a number of child marriages.

Enquiries revealed that the story of a girl who got married while she was in school illustrates both sides of the argument: the difficulty in pursuing education after being given in marriage at a young age, and the determination to study further. Her husband suffered an accident and was bedridden for long. The girl had to discontinue her studies for nearly two years to nurse him. She passed her class X examinations as a private candidate, scoring over 400 out of 500 marks.

Thereafter, she returned to the school and continues to study in Class XII without any hitch.

When contacted over phone, Minister for Social Welfare B. Valarmathi said that the government led by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was making all-out effort to prevent child marriages across the State. “We are doing all that is possible within our might to discourage people from giving girls below 18 years of age in marriage. But, as far as admitting minor child brides in schools is concerned, it is the School Education Department which has to take the final call.”
