Amendments to RTI Act: Aruna Roy slams UPA government

UPA Government's credibility is in question as instead of approaching court to oppose the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) order bringing them under the ambit of the RTI Act, they decided to amend the Act itself, said activist Aruna Roy on Monday and asked government to hold wide ranging discussions before going ahead with their plan.

Roy, who was also the member of Congress president Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council, said government's move to amend the Act will reinforce and confirm the suspicions of many that the political establishment intends to cover acts of corruption and arbitrary use of power.

Aruna Roy was flanked by other activists of the National Campaign for People's Right to Information (NCPRI) which played instrumental role in movement for passage of a strong RTI Act in parliament in 2005.

Roy and other activists also accused government of back tracking on their promise which it made in 2009 that non-governmental organisations and social activists will be consulted on the amendments.

She also released a letter written to the prime minister over the issue urging him "not to take steps to amend and dilute the RTI law" which she said has been acknowledged in India and abroad as an affirmation of the right of India citizens to participate and monitor democratic governance.

"Today over one crore people of India from everywhere including distant parts of the country use RTI and they will not let the RTI Act be amended like this. Already protests are taking place across the country to oppose the government's move," Roy added.

Another activist Nikhil Dey said NCPRI is organising a public meeting at Jantar Mantar where it has urged political parties to come and speak their mind over amendments proposed to the RTI Act.

The activists also praised Trinamool Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh who have opposed amendments to the transparency law.

"We have invited leaders of all political parties to come and voice their opinion. Also it would be interesting for them to know what common people think of the move," Dey added.

The activists are also trying to meet Sonia Gandhi as she was the one who pushed for passing RTI Act in 2005 during UPA-I's tenure.
