Of the four persons who died in the rioting in Kosi Kalan in Mathura district on Friday, two were twins. Postmortem has confirmed that both of them were alive when they suffered the burns that killed them. The family says they were caught by a mob and thrown into a burning shop, from which their bodies were found.

Bhura and Kallua, who made a living selling vegetables on the Agra-Delhi highway, are both survived by their wives and two children each. They were only 22.

According to the family, Bhura had been shot in the abdomen by a stray bullet during the riots. His family was taking him to a hospital when the mob attacked them. While others escaped, the mob allegedly caught the twins.

District SP Dharamvir Singh said Bhura’s mother-in-law Farzana, who was injured in the mob attack and is now hospitalised in Mathura, had narrated the sequence of events. Station Officer Rajveer Singh confirmed that the postmortem report attributed their death to ante-mortem burn injuries.

Both residents of Rathore Nagar, Bhura and Kallua had heard of the riots and were returning home with their carts around 2 pm on Friday when the former got shot. “Bhura was standing at the end of the lane when a bullet him,” said neighbour Usman Qureshi.

Bhura’s eldest brother Mohammad Suleman Qureshi and Kallua put him in a cart-rickshaw, belonging to a neighbour, and rushed him to Chauhan Nursing Home, around half a kilometre away. Suleman tied his scarf around Bhura’s wound to try and stop the blood loss. Their sister Munni and Farzana accompanied them.

Qureshi claimed the nursing home turned them away, saying no doctor was available. The family then decided to take Bhura to a BPL nursing home, another half a kilometre away .

On the way, Suleman said they saw a mob carrying firearms, sticks and sharp-edged weapons. As the mob came closer, Suleman and Munni ran away, but Kallua and Farzana insisted on taking Bhura to hospital.

According to what Farzana told the family, the mob beat up both Kallua and her. When the owner of a nearby dhaba and its employees objected, the mob let Farzana go but reportedly not Kallua. Farzana suffered several injuries on a hand, leg and her back.

The mob allegedly then turned on Kallua and the injured Bhura. They were beaten unconscious and thrown into a burning scrap shop, said another brother Saleem, who submitted a complaint to the police.

Bhura’s family soon got to know of what had happened, but could not venture out as curfew had been imposed.

The next day, said Suleman, “Farzana went out alone. On the way, policemen stopped her. She told them that she had got injured the previous day and was going to a hospital. When she reached the scrap shop, she saw the two bodies and was able to identify them.”

Farzana informed the family, who in turn contacted the police. The policemen took them to the spot and sent the bodies for postmortem.

Late on Saturday night, the twins were buried.
