BATHINDA (Punjab): The spate of protests is not ending in Bathinda even after the model code of conduct for elections coming into force. On Friday, anganwari workers and helpers observed the International Women's Day by holding a huge protest in the town. Anganwari Mulazim Union, under the banner of Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU), held a protest, in which hundreds of women from across Malwa region took part.

Speaking on the occasion, CITU vice-president Raghunath Singh also demanded fair wages for anganwari workers to enable them lead a dignified life. Heavy police force was deployed as protesters surrounded the Bathinda district administrative complex (DAC).

The agitators accused both the Union and state governments of befooling womenfolk in the name of women empowerment and termed their promises as a mere eyewash. Demanding a hike in honorarium, along with regularization of jobs, they lambasted the Congress-led UPA government and Punjab's SAD-BJP government for not doing anything to empower women in real terms and instead making false claims on that count.

Usha Rani, state chief of Anganwari Mulazim Union, said, "We are being discriminated against in Punjab as compared to neighhbouring Haryana, which is paying Rs 7,500 per month to anganwari workers and Rs 3,750 per month to helpers. In Punjab, anganwari workers are being paid Rs 5,000 each and helpers get Rs 2,500 as monthly honorarium. We demand that this disparity be removed and our jobs be regularized."
