Anna Hazare, the 72-year-old social activist and Gandhian, on Monday slammed Union Telecommunications Minister Kapil Sibal for reportedly saying that the Lokpal Bill will not eradicate corruption from India. Hazare said that if Sibal has no faith in the proposed Lokpal then he should resign from the committee that has been formed to draft a stronger anti-corruption law.

"If Kapil Sibal feels that nothing will happen from Lokpal Bill, he should resign immediately from the committee. There is nothing wrong in changing the system. We have to try to change the system, we have been successful to an extent as well. If there is a need to stand against corruption, we would stand up together to fight against corruption," said Hazare while reacting to Sibal's statement on the Lokpal Bill.

Former Indian Police Service officer and Hazare supporter Kiran Bedi along with RTI activist Arvind Kejiwal, too, came down heavily on Sibal.

"This Bill will change the future of the country and root out corruption from India. If any member who is either from the Government or the civil society does not believe in this (then) they should step out of the committee," said Kiran.

"If you are not getting your water, food and education due to corruption, then we can expect this law to help you get those things. But if there's a shortage of these resources then this anti-corruption law won’t help. That can only be dealt with in the Budget. So Kapil Sibal's sweeping statement is not completely correct," said Kejriwal, who is also a member of committee that will draft the Lokpal Bill.

Sibal, however, claimed that he had been misquoted and he would work with Hazare on readying a draft of the Lokpal Bill to be introduced in the monsoon session of Parliament.

"Why he wants my resignation. I am with Annaji. I want that the Lokpal Bill should be drafted very soon. I have not said this. I will sit with Annaji and work on the bill so that a good bill will be drafted very soon," said Sibal.

Sibal reportedly made the controversial statement on Monday while the inaugurating a block committee office of the Congress in New Delhi. He reportedly said that it was important to change the overall system to root out corruption from India and merely a Lokpal Bill won't help the common man.

Hazare's four-day long fast-unto-death for a stronger anti-corruption law had forced the Government to form a committee to redraft the Lokpal Bill.

The 10-member committee includes five from the civil society. The members of the civil society are Hazare, Kejriwal, senior lawyers Shanti Bhushan and Prashant Bhushan, and Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hegde. Shanti Bhushan will be the co-chairman along with Mukherjee.

The Government will be represented by Mukherjee, Sibal, Law Minister Veerappa Moily, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Water Resources Minister Salman Khurshid.
