Anna Hazare and his team were once again on the confrontation course with the Manmohan Singh government, with the activist setting 2014 - which coincides with the next general elections - as the deadline for converting the Jan Lokpal bill, drafted by them, into a law.

"Government's intention is not clear on removing corruption and that is why they are not bringing Jan Lokpal Bill," alleged Hazare while staging a day-long dharna at Jantar Mantar on Sunday in support of their demand seeking justice for the slain Madhya Pradesh IPS officer Narendra Kumar and protection for the whistleblowers.

The protest began with a short film screening on the whistleblowers who have been killed during their fight against corruption.

CONGRESS REJECTS ANNA'S ULTIMATUM

Congress, however, rejected Anna's ultimatum on the Jan Lokpal bill, maintaining that the authority to make laws was vested with Parliament. "Anna ji has a right to fast.

However, what kind of law will be framed, how it will be framed, are issues which will be decided by Parliament, and not by an individual. Parliament makes laws which it thinks are most appropriate," par ty spokesperson Rashid Alvi said.

He added that the government was committed to bringing a Lokpal bill, for which it was trying to evolve a consensus. "As far as Lokpal is concerned, government is committed.

Everybody knows that we do not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha. So we are trying to take all parties along to get the law passed in Parliament," the Congress spokesman said.

Alvi sought to make light of Hazare's fast, insisting that it did not make much difference as Parliament represented the will of the people. "Fasting by Anna Hazare does not make a difference. Parliament is supreme and the public sends its representatives to the Parliament. And these representatives make laws which they think are the most appropriate.

If some individual thinks that there are lacunae in that law, then that is his personal opinion," he said. The day-long dharna marked the resumption of the confrontation between Team Anna and the government over the latter's alleged refusal to pass the Jan Lokpal bill.

The last time members of the anti-corruption brigade sat on a threeday fast at Azad Maidan in Mumbai against the "weak" Lokpal bill being sought to be passed by the Centre, it turned out to be tame affair. The show fizzled out in the absence of popular support.

'DEAF & DUMB' GOVERNMENT

The team is now threatening to launch its agitation against the government. Calling upon his supporters to give the anti-graft campaign a fresh life, Anna said, "We don't have to sleep now. We have slept enough."

The anti-graft campaigner said he and the other members of the team will embark on a mass mobilisation programme against the government's version of the Lokpal, which was dubbed as "useless" by him.

"As many as 25 people who fought against corruption were murdered. We have been stressing on protection of whistleblowers through a law but the government is not ready to do it,'' the social activist said.

He warned that he will organise a big protest against the "deaf and dumb" government, which, he alleged, was turning a blind eye to whistleblowers who were being targeted while fighting corruption.

TEAM ANNA & RAMDEV JOIN HANDS

The day-long fast also saw Team Anna and Baba Ramdev deciding to join hands in their combat against corruption. Anna announced that from now onwards his supporters will work in co-operation with the Yoga guru's campaign against black money to eliminate corruption.

KEJRIWAL TARGETS MINISTERS, BJP

While Anna was restrained in his remarks, his colleague Arvind Kejriwal was more combative as he launched an assault on some of the prominent UPA ministers, claiming that cases would have been registered against 14 ministers if the Lokpal had come into force by now.

"If Lokpal bill comes into force, FIRs will be lodged against 14 ministers of the Union government," Arvind Kejriwal said, and reeled out their names. "Who will punish people like them? Delhi Police or the CBI? No one knows because these people will never pass Lokpal Bill," Kejriwal sought to know.

He also targeted BJP for its plans to reinstate BS Yeddyurappa as the Karnataka chief minister.
