Anna Hazare will not campaign in the five election-bound states because of his poor health, aide Kiran Bedi said today.

The Team Anna member said Hazare, 74, had been advised complete rest, and therefore he would not undertake the promised tour of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur, which are going to the polls from January 28 to March 3.

“Anna is not going to campaign in the states. We have urged him not to travel. The doctors are not allowing any more fast and travel at the moment,” Bedi told reporters after meeting Hazare at Sancheti Hospital in Pune where he has been admitted since December 31 for a chest infection.

The anti-corruption activist’s health has improved but he needs rest, Bedi said. “He is on antibiotics and drips. That’s why he needs rest at the moment. He needs total care at the moment and he needs to remain at the hospital for a few more weeks to prevent any relapse,” she added.

Doctors said Hazare had been responding to the treatment after the hospital increased the dosage of antibiotics on Tuesday.

Team Anna’s core committee is scheduled to meet on Saturday to chalk out a strategy for their anti-corruption movement. Bedi said Hazare had shared his “thoughts and ideas” with her and she would present them at the meeting.

Hazare, who has been running a campaign against the UPA government over the Lokpal bill, cut short his protest programme last month citing ill-health after failing to draw crowds. Calling off his three-day fast in Mumbai on the second day — December 29 — and announcing that a jail bharo programme and a plan to hold sit-ins outside the houses of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi stood suspended, Hazare had said he would campaign against the Congress in the elections.

The 74-year-old said he would travel to the five poll-bound states to tell people how the Congress had “betrayed” him on adopting a stronger Lokpal bill.

Hazare, who had a cold and fever when he was in Mumbai, was admitted to hospital a day after returning home to his village Ralegan Siddhi near Pune.

A medical bulletin on his condition issued by the hospital today said he had made “considerable progress and was gradually recovering”. Hazare’s chest X-ray, ECG and blood tests were normal and he was being given Vitamin D supplements in addition to intravenous antibiotics, it said. Hazare was sleeping well and feeling much better now, Dr Parag Sancheti said, adding a decision on his discharge would be taken on Sunday.
