NEW DELHI: The curtains are down on former chief minister Sheila Dikshit's Annshree Yojna. The over one lakh beneficiaries will be enrolled for the food security programme, and the ration is expected to be supplied from May 1.

The cash-for-food scheme was the first such project of the Delhi government launched by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in December 2012 to promote the UPA's idea of cash transfer as a way to end corruption in disbursal of social benefits. The scheme, however, had come in for criticism from activists, who felt the government was avoiding its responsibility to clean up the system and ensure regular supplies of subsidized ration.

The flow of monthly cash subsidy of Rs 600 for the families, which are not covered by the public distribution system, ended on March 31. The department of food and civil supplies has ordered its officials to contact all beneficiaries, who will enrolled afresh under the food security scheme. "The enrolment is in full swing and from next month, all these beneficiaries should be able to get the benefits under the food programme," said secretary, food and civil supplies, S S Yadav.

Four kilograms of wheat at Rs 2 per unit and 1kg of rice at Rs 3 per person is the monthly take-home for "priority households" under the programme. The Annshree beneficiaries had been getting cash from April 1, 2012 through the Aadhaar-based direct cash transfers to zero balance bank accounts.

With the city under President's rule, and the two schemes having been reviewed, the food and civil supplies department had last month brought on board more staff from other departments for vigorous enrolment of Annshree beneficiaries in the food programme, so that the cash subsidy can be stopped. This was done with the consent of LG Najeeb Jung.
