Mumbai: The anti-Jaitapur nuclear power plant groups on Monday protested in front of the Japanese embassy here against a possible nuclear agreement between India and Japan.

The protesters claimed that the Japanese government, which has ordered the closure of all 50 nuclear power plants, is eyeing India as a potential market for its companies through the agreement.

"On one hand the Japanese government, under people's pressure, is closing down the nuclear reactors, and on the other sending its companies to India," said Advait Pednekar of the Konkan Bachao Samiti.

Areva, the French company that will build the 9,900 MW nuclear plant at Jaitapur, will get pressure vessels for the project from the Japanese company.

"We are against the double standards played by the Japanese government. Their move is a clear violation of Indians' human rights," said Satyajit Chavan of the samiti.
