Armed tribals on Wednesday blocked the Bhanjanagar-Dasaplla road at Gayaganda in Ganjam district in protest against the arrest of 29 tribals from Ambajahari within Tarsingi forest range.

Forest personnel raided the reserve forest and arrested these people for constructing their house by encroaching upon forest land and chopping trees, divisional forest officer, Ghumusar (South) B B Behera said. Behera said the encroachers tried to attack the forest personnel with axe, bows and arrows. Many weapons were seized from them, he said. The tribal people backed by Lok Sangram Manch (LSM) disrupted communication between Bhanjanagar and Nayagarh. "Though situation was tense, it was under control," the DFO said.

A LSM leader alleged that forest personnel and CRPF damaged the houses of tribals and looted their belongings. "While on one hand the government was extended forest rights to tribals under the Forest Rights Act, on the other hand forest officials cracked down on innocent tribals who live in the forest for years," K C Pradhan of LSM alleged.

A month ago, tribals had forcibly taken possession of around 100 acres of forest land by chopping down trees after the government denied to provide the rights of records of the land even though they lived there for several years, the tribals alleged.
