With the met office forecasting more rains over next two days, the administration is on high alert

The Army was pressed into service on Saturday in rescue and support operations in the rain-affected areas of the greater Hyderabad region. Army officials met senior Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC0 officers in the early of Saturday and procured maps and information related to the present ground situation in the city.

Eight task force teams of the Army were deployed in Malkajgiri, Alwal, Hakeempet and Nizampet. A control room has been set up by the Army in the GHMC headquarters to coordinate with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the GHMC staff.

More rains

Skies once again opened up in the early hours of Saturday as the city received moderate rains. Less than 2 cm rainfall was recorded in the city, but it did not bring much respite to the residents of some colonies in Malkajgiri, Alwal and Nizampet as they continued to struggle with knee-deep water.

Some schools and colleges continued to function. Around 40 schoolchildren were put to great risk after their school bus got stuck in a water-logged street in Allwyn Colony. Locals came to the rescue of the students and brought them to safety.

Help from all quarters

Help continued to pour in for the residents affected and displaced by the rains. Apart from voluntary organisations and individuals, movie artists association members were also seen distributing food packets to people in Nizampet.

The water level in the Hussainsagar continued to be above the full tank level. With the met office forecasting more rains over the next two days, the administration is on high alert.

Chief Minister K. Chanrasekhar Rao has convened a high-level meeting with officials to review the situation.
