Three years after he was arrested by CBI from a Mumbai hotel along with an arms dealer, Indian Revenue Service officer Ashutosh Verma was reinstated by the Income Tax Department. Last month, he was promoted as Joint Commissioner, Income Tax.

In March 2008, Verma was arrested together with arms dealer Suresh Nanda, his son Sanjeev and Nanda’s chartered accountant Bipin Shah.

The arrests were made after a surveillance unit of the CBI picked up a phone conversation in which Verma was heard saying “I would not have earned throughout my life even 10 per cent of what I have got in this deal.” Armed with this one remark by Verma, then Deputy Director of Income Tax (Investigations), the CBI zeroed in.

At that time, Verma was handling the file of Suresh Nanda who had been named by the CBI in FIRs on two big Defence deals — the import of Barak missiles and supply of Armoured Recovery Vehicles. The deals were among a clutch of 48 cases referred to the CBI between December 2004 and August 2005.

The Sunday Express has learnt that Verma was reinstated in March this year and promoted in October. He is posted as Deputy Director (TDS) in Delhi and is also functioning as Central Public Information officer (CPIO).

Reached over phone, Verma confirmed he had been promoted but declined to go into details. “I am not authorised to speak to the media,” he said.

Central Board of Direct Taxes spokesperson Shishir Jha said Verma was reinstated and promoted because the CBI failed to file a chargesheet against him. He said promotion could be denied only on three grounds — suspension, chargesheet in a corruption case and a criminal case, and when the court takes cognisance.

Jha said it was for the CBI to give reasons for initiating departmental proceedings. “They haven’t communicated anything to us,” he said. “We had no reason to extend his suspension and the officer was reinstated after revocation of the statutory period of suspension.”

When her comments were sought, CBI spokesperson Dharini Mishra said: “This is an old case and it will take some time to dig out details.”
