According to a PMO statement, Modi called for a focus on medium and long-term solutions for “drought-proofing”

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah to discuss the drought situation. The Centre and the states resolved to work together to mitigate problems faced by people against the backdrop of a severe water shortage.

According to a PMO statement, Modi called for a focus on medium and long-term solutions for “drought-proofing”. “The Prime Minister stressed on the use of technologies like remote sensing and satellite imaging for planning of water conservation and recharge structures. The need to change cropping patterns…and fertigation for increasing water use efficiency… was stressed. The Prime Minister mentioned the need to monitor delivery of water through tankers in the affected areas, using technology such as GPS,” the statement said.

The meeting also discussed how the period before the upcoming monsoon can be utilised for water conservation and recharge efforts. This includes desilting, recharging of rivers, check dams and other water storage mechanisms.

During the meeting, Yadav sought nearly Rs 11,000 crore from the Centre and financial assistance to buy 10,000 tankers to carry water to villages in drought-hit districts of UP.

“The Centre and the state have to work together…farmers have faced the onslaught of both hailstorm and drought…we want to increase the number of tankers to carry water to villagers,” Yadav told reporters after the hour-long meeting with the Prime Minister.

Asked why the state government had rejected an offer of a water train to Bundelkhand, he said there is water in Bundelkhand but his government needs means to carry it to villages. “Can a train carry water to villages?” he said.

With Fadnavis, Modi stressed on the need to adopt a “judicious mix of traditional and modern water conservation and storage mechanisms”. He said that a lot can be learnt from the water management practices and measures adopted by Chhatrapati Shivaji, a PMO statement said. Fadnavis told Modi that the state is working to rejuvenate the water-bodies of that era.

Fadnavis, who sought financial assistance worth Rs 30,000 crore for 132 irrigation projects in Marathwada, Vidarbha and parts of western Maharashtra, said the PM had given in-principle assurance for the projects.

Siddaramaiah, too, sought an additional Rs 12,272 crore funds for improving supply of drinking water and fodder.
