The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to restore the tribal land allegedly encroached by a windmill company at Attappady in Palakkad district. Those who fabricated documents for facilitating the encroachment would be prosecuted.

The Cabinet also decided to institute a comprehensive Vigilance inquiry into the alleged involvement of officials of various departments in the alienation of the tribal land.

Briefing the media on the Cabinet decisions, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said the inquiry would be completed in three months. The Cabinet had approved in principle the report of the committee headed by the Chief Secretary that looked into the alienation of the tribal land at Attappady.

(Meanwhile, Suzlon Energy Limited said in a statement that it had not seen the report of the Chief Secretary-headed panel, referred to by the Chief Minister during his Cabinet briefing. The statement added that the company had not been heard during the formulation of the report. “Our company's policy is to always comply with the law of the land and be sensitive to community issues.”)

Monitoring panels

Monitoring committees would be set up to ensure time-bound completion of public works. The toll-free call centre for receiving complaints from the public about the condition of roads would be turned into a permanent set-up. An advisory committee on public works would be formed with the Public Works Minister as chairman.

Mr. Achuthanandan said the Cabinet had recommended to the Governor the promulgation of an ordinance for granting pension to advocate's clerks from the clerks' welfare fund. The pension would be Rs.500 a month. Security men would be brought under the purview of the Kerala Shops and Commercial Establishment Workers' Welfare Fund.

He said that 125 hectares at Puthur village in Thrissur district, in the possession of the Kerala Forest Development Corporation, would be handed over to the Higher Education Department for the establishment of a world-class university. About 30 acres at Kainur village in the district would be given to the department for establishing a science city.
