The man, who on the eve of India’s independence deliberately opted to study Agriculture Science instead of Medicine, M S Swaminathan, on Tuesday said attracting young minds to farming is the essential for the revival of the sagging farm sector.

The Father of Indian Green Revolution said that the challenge before the country is to get younger generation to the fields. This is important to continue the tradition of farming.

The 84-year-old former Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), who was in Panaji in Goa to interact with a group of farmers, told news agency PTI that conserving the farmland is an enormous challenge before the country.

Swaminathan, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP, said the institutes like ICAR have been providing all possible support to the farmers. Food parks and integrated methods like fish farming will attract more people into the farm sector, which sustains over 60 per cent of population.

He said states like Goa should have special agriculture zones. “Horticulture is on the right path and similarly we need to have agriculture zones,” he said.

Swaminathan, it must be recalled, opted to study Agriculture Seience as he was very much upset by the food crisis India had been facing at the time of Indepedence.

It was his contribuition, which led to the Green Revolution in India, especially in Punjab, Haryana and West Uttar Pradesh.

He now calls for the Second Green Revolution in the country.
