Though El Nino concerns still loom large over the coming month, August has been wetter than expected. Rains in the last 16 days have lashed the parched fields of most parts of the country, especially the northern and western parts which were reeling under acute rain deficiency.

More rains have recharged depleted reservoirs. Water level in 84 main reservoirs is at 51% of the full reservoir level, equalling the10-year average.

Rains picked up pace in August first week when average rainfall was barely 1% below normal. By second week, it was 2% below normal which is a tremendous improvement over July when the deficiency was 13% and June which was dry by almost 30%.

IMD has forecast August rains to be 96% of normal. It was 99% of normal in the first week and 98% in the second week. It predicts more rains in the coming fortnight with low pressure developing over the Bay of Bengal.

"For the last few days, northwestern parts were getting good rains while north-eastern, eastern and central parts were relatively dry. In the next three days, low pressure over Bay of Bengal will bring more rains to north-eastern, eastern and central parts of the country. However, north-western parts too will continue to get showers albeit with relatively less intensity," said Dr S C Bhan, spokesperson of India Meteorological Department.

"August rains may not have improve productivity and yield but they will definitely open a sowing window for short-duration varieties, easing pressure for farmers who are battling a drought-like situation in states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka," said P K Joshi, director ( South Asia) of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).
