The State government of the day spares no occasion to make a mention of the “shambles” the 34 years of Left rule has left West Bengal in. The Economic Review presented in the State Legislative Assembly, however, tells a different story.

It highlights several areas where the State's performance has been “impressive over the last few years”. Mention is made of progress in agriculture, industry, rural development, industrial relations and rising per capita income.

The Economic Review speaks of the higher rate of growth that West Bengal has achieved.

As for the bugbear of the Mamata Banerjee government, the State's financial health, the Review admits willy-nilly that much of it was due to Central Government policies.

The Review says the performance of the agriculture sector in the State has been quite impressive over the last few years and that West Bengal is now among the country's top producers of commodities like rice, jute and potato.

The report also mentions that despite a drought in 2010-11 the State kept five per cent of its total area under foodgrain cultivation and accounted for 6.1 per cent of the country's total food production.

The Review also noted that cropping intensity in West Bengal has shown steady growth and it is among the top two States in this category over the last few years.

Notwithstanding the virulent attacks mounted on the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government for “handing” out agriculture land for industry, the document prepared by the new government says agricultural production had responded to land reforms measures as well as extensive use of minor irrigation system exploiting underground water over the past three decades.

“Land reforms system implemented in the State for the past years has boosted the rural economy,” says the Review.

According to the Review, the State's growth rate of the index of industrial production was consistent with the country's with exceptions during three years. Referring to the growth of IT companies, the review notes that almost all major national and international IT companies are present in West Bengal.
