Anna Hazare’s group today released purported evidence that the audio CD implicating Shanti Bhushan and his son Prashant was doctored, alleged government involvement and threatened to move the Supreme Court.

The development threatens a fresh standoff between the Centre and the civil society members of the Lok Pal Bill drafting committee, which includes both the Bhushans.

Prashant and fellow panel member Arvind Kejriwal said they had got the CD examined by two forensic laboratories, one in the US and the other in Hyderabad. They released the lab reports to the media, saying both reports had confirmed doctoring.

In the disc, a voice resembling Shanti Bhushan’s says that most judges are corrupt and that the speaker’s son Prashant can fix a judge for Rs 4 crore. The other voices are purportedly those of Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and his former associate Amar Singh.

The CD had surfaced just before the drafting panel held its first meeting yesterday, and led to demands for the Bhushans’ resignation from the committee.

“Spectrographic analysis... by both laboratories has confirmed multiple electronic editing and gaps. It clearly proves doctoring and an attempt to malign civil society (to) derail the drafting (of) an effective Lok Pal Bill,” Prashant said.

Asked if he thought the government was involved, he said: “People in the government must definitely have been involved. In a day or two, we will move the Supreme Court and seek a thorough probe to unearth the conspiracy and identify the people involved.”

Prashant alleged the CD was also aimed at derailing the judicial processes in the 2G and Amar phone-tapping cases. He said the judge mentioned in the CD was presiding over both cases in the apex court.

“Judgment in the two cases has been reserved.... It (the doctoring) amounts to contempt of court as well as grave criminal offence,” he said.

Prashant said that portions of a conversation between Mulayam and Amar had been “sliced and inserted” into the purported conversation with his father.

To a question, he said: “The voice seems to resemble that of my father but in what context he has talked about Rs 4 crore cannot be known since the CD was doctored.”

Interpreter

Anna Hazare has sought an interpreter at the drafting panel’s meetings beginning with its second session on May 2, PTI adds. Hazare said he could not follow the discussions, which took place in English, at the first meeting.

Sources said the government had accepted the request. Hazare also insisted that the panel’s meetings be video-recorded from now on.
