An intense cold wave has gripped northern India, claiming more than thirty lives already. Five more deaths were reported across Uttar Pradesh as the mercury dipped due to rains at some places. While a 70-year-old man and a two-year-old boy died in Bahraich and Farukkhabad districts respectively, one death each was reported from Sitapur, Mahoba and Chitrakoot in the last 24 hours.

Etawah was the coldest at 6.1 degrees, Lucknow was warmer at 8. Uttaranchal's capital Dehradun recorded a low of 6 degrees. Delhi experienced its coldest day of the season as it went below 15 degrees for the first time this winter.

Leh town in Jammu and Kashmir saw mercury nosediving to this winter's lowest of minus 23.6 degrees as an intense cold wave grips northern India, claiming at least eight lives.

Srinagar is expected to see the mercury dip below freezing point to minus 4 degrees on Monday. But there is no stopping winter tourism in the Kashmir valley with in Gulmarg and Pahalgam at minus 12 inviting people from across India.

In Himachal Pradesh too there was no respite from the cold as the temperature in Shimla dropped to minus 6 degrees. Heavy snowfall has caused power disruptions in some places. Roads are covered in two inches of snow leaving tourists stranded for hours. The local police are still trying to clear the roads.

Residents of Amritsar and the rest of Punjab shivered too with the cold wave intensifying. The mercury went down to 3 degrees in Amritsar with Chandigarh slightly warmer at 6 degrees.
