BJP cleared expressway, now it is opposing project

BJP may have stalled proceedings in both Houses of parliament on Monday over the firing in Aligarh in which four people were killed.

But the lesser talked-about fact of the matter is that the original notification for the Taj Expressway was issued in April 2001 when BJP’s Rajnath Singh was the Uttar Pradesh (UP) chief minister.

The expressway, which Mayawati re-christened as Yamuna Expressway, is at the crux of the ongoing clash between farmers and the state government. The Jay Pee Group is executing the project estimated at a whopping Rs40,000 crore.

In fact, not only the BJP, but other major parties, now crying blue murder over acquisition of farmers’ land, are perhaps equally to blame for this violent denouement. Mayawati took over as CM in 2002 after Rajnath, followed by Mulayam Singh Yadav in August 2003.

The question now being asked is if the farmers were actually being victimised? Why didn’t the BSP or the Samajwadi Party (SP) governments oppose or quash the project when in power? Interestingly, the self-proclaimed messiah of west UP farmers, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh, who is currently spearheading the farmers’ agitation, was a partner in all the three governments — Rajnath Singh, Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav, from between 2001 and 2007.

BSP general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra told reporters outside parliament on Monday that opposition parties were only playing politics to attack the Mayawati regime over the issue. He said those killed had not been hit by police bullets. He pointed out that a PAC platoon commander was also among the deceased, citing it as proof that it was actually the mob which had attacked the men in uniform.

BSP has also seized the opportunity to bring up the land allotted for Anil Ambani’s Dadri power project during Mulayam’s regime.

“The SP chief has no right to criticise our government on land acquisition. He should remember how he gifted thousands of acres of land acquired forcibly to his blue-eyed industrial house at negligible rates,” a release by Mayawati stated.

Though Mulayam faces the accusation of not dropping the project when in power (2003 to 2006), the fact remains that most of the land was handed over to the Jay Pee Group during the two BSP regimes, first in 2002-03 and then after Mayawati took over as CM in 2007.
