CHENNAI:
An average of seven people die in building collapses in the country every day, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics.

More than 20 people were killed in two different building collapses in New Delhi and Chennai on Saturday.

In 2012, a total of 2,682 people died and 850 people were injured in 2,764 accident cases across the country, according to the NCRB data.

Uttar Pradesh recorded the maximum number of deaths due to building collapses in the country (394) followed by Madhya Pradesh (284), Andhra Pradesh (245), Punjab (235) and Maharashtra (220).

As many as 219 people were killed in building collapses in Tamil Nadu in 2012.

Experts say an increase in the number of deaths is due to substandard construction material and practices. An urban planner said civic agencies were unable to tackle illegal constructions because of severe staff shortage.

"There is a gradual increase in the number of high rises across the country because of population growth. But most civic agencies are unable to conduct inspections and check the quality of materials used for constructions because of severe staff shortage," he said.

He said that builders got planning permission and approvals after paying bribe to politicians and civic officials. "Most contractors are employing untrained workers and won't give them protective gears. The migrant construction workers become victims when buildings under construction collapse," he added.
