The country's premier auditor, Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), has won the prestigious bid to audit the United Nations World Food Programme. The audit is awarded for a period of six years.

The CAG is considered among the best six official auditors in the world, ranked only after Canada, US, UK and France. The food programme was last audited by France. In the final bid process, India beat Philippines and South Africa. Nine countries had participated in the bids.

"The World Food Programme (WFP) needed to have an external agency to do their audit. We were invited to bid for the audit and against bids from all other countries we have been selected," CAG Vinod Rai told reporters in Shimla.

Rai said a formal announcement for the contract is likely to be made in June second week, when the WFP's executive board is scheduled to meet.

Among the total nine bids which were received from various countries, five were shortlisted and three were called for interaction including India's CAG.

However, Rai declined to give any financial details about the contract.
