Some of the country's most prominent para-athletes, Bhopal gas leak victims and campaigners have called on the Union Government to boycott the upcoming London Olympics unless Dow Chemical is dropped as sponsor.

“All Indian para-athletes should boycott London Paralympics-2012 until Dow Chemical is dropped as a sponsor. The Indian Olympics Association and the Sports Ministry of India should show much stronger protests against this sponsorship,” said Haryana Paralympic Association secretary Girraj Singh.

Mr. Girraj Singh was joined by a number of prominent Indian para-athletes, including Asian Games participants Trivendan Singh and Sonu Gupta, in his appeal to the Indian Government.

The para-athletes all signed Lorraine Close's petition calling on Sebastian Coe to drop Dow Chemical as sponsors.

Also present at the conference was 17-year-old Sachin who lives in one of the water-contaminated areas behind the Union Carbide factory and who has lost both his legs as a result of drinking contaminated water.

“Dow Chemical is responsible for the contamination of ground water in my community. Because of Dow Chemical's refusal to clean up the hazardous waste left by the Union Carbide factory, 40,000 people are routinely exposed to cancers and birth defect-causing chemicals. By allowing Dow Chemical as a sponsor, Lord Coe is encouraging Dow to continue to poison the unborn,” said Sachin.
