How effective will this measure be?</p><p>The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) is the apex regulatory body. Each state has its own regulator. The state regulators look after licencing and audit manufacturing facilities while CDSCO is responsible for approving new drugs, imports of devices, clinical trials and standards for drugs.&nbsp;</p><p>The new proposal is likely to be a step towards centralization of drug regulation in India. Currently, drugs older than four years can be registered in one state and sold in another. The Health Ministry may be planning a single centrlized system for the registration of all drugs under CDSCO.&nbsp;</p><p>The new system may not have much of a bearing on export quality, as drugs sold in the global market are subject to the regulations of the buyer country. The US/Europe deploy vast resources to make pharma adhere to their own standards while poorer nations like Gambia often rely on lists and inputs from the World Health Organization.&nbsp;</p><p>Even if drug registration is centralized, the regulation for manufacturing will be decentralized. A plant is jointly inspected by CDSCO and state regulators, but regular auditing is done by state authorities. India nrrfd greater accountability at the manufacturer level to adhere to norms.&nbsp;</p><p>Along with tighter regulation of manufacturing there needs to be a national policy on drug recall.                             <p>Livemint</p><p>Recent deaths in Gambia, Uzbekistan and the US, allegedly caused by toxic drugs made in India, has the Centre reportedly planning to centralize drug regulation. How effective will this measure be?</p><p>The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) is the apex regulatory body. Each state has its own regulator. The state regulators look after licencing and audit manufacturing facilities while CDSCO is responsible for approving new drugs, imports of devices, clinical trials and standards for drugs.&nbsp;</p><p>The new proposal is likely to be a step towards centralization of drug regulation in India. Currently, drugs older than four years can be registered in one state and sold in another. The Health Ministry may be planning a single centrlized system for the registration of all drugs under CDSCO.&nbsp;</p><p>The new system may not have much of a bearing on export quality, as drugs sold in the global market are subject to the regulations of the buyer country. The US/Europe deploy vast resources to make pharma adhere to their own standards while poorer nations like Gambia often rely on lists and inputs from the World Health Organization.&nbsp;</p><p>Even if drug registration is centralized, the regulation for manufacturing will be decentralized. A plant is jointly inspected by CDSCO and state regulators, but regular auditing is done by state authorities. India nrrfd greater accountability at the manufacturer level to adhere to norms.&nbsp;</p><p>Along with tighter regulation of manufacturing there needs to be a national policy on drug recall.                             <p>Livemint</p><p>Recent deaths in Gambia, Uzbekistan and the US, allegedly caused by toxic drugs made in India, has the Centre reportedly planning to centralize drug regulation. How effective will this measure be?</p><p>The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) is the apex regulatory body. Each state has its own regulator. The state regulators look after licencing and audit manufacturing facilities while CDSCO is responsible for approving new drugs, imports of devices, clinical trials and standards for drugs.&nbsp;</p><p>The new proposal is likely to be a step towards centralization of drug regulation in India. Currently, drugs older than four years can be registered in one state and sold in another. The Health Ministry may be planning a single centrlized system for the registration of all drugs under CDSCO.&nbsp;</p><p>The new system may not have much of a bearing on export quality, as drugs sold in the global market are subject to the regulations of the buyer country. The US/Europe deploy vast resources to make pharma adhere to their own standards while poorer nations like Gambia often rely on lists and inputs from the World Health Organization.&nbsp;</p><p>Even if drug registration is centralized, the regulation for manufacturing will be decentralized. A plant is jointly inspected by CDSCO and state regulators, but regular auditing is done by state authorities. India nrrfd greater accountability at the manufacturer level to adhere to norms.&nbsp;</p><p>Along with tighter regulation of manufacturing there needs to be a national policy on drug recall. Can Centralized Regulation Help Drug Quality? - Tauseef Shahidi

Livemint Recent deaths in Gambia, Uzbekistan and the US, allegedly caused by toxic drugs made in India, has the Centre reportedly planning to centralize drug regulation. How effective will this measure be? The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) is the apex regulatory body. Each state has its own regulator. The state regulators look after licencing and audit manufacturing facilities while CDSCO is responsible for approving new drugs, imports of devices, clinical trials and standards for drugs.  The new proposal is likely to be a step towards centralization of drug regulation in India. Currently, drugs older than four years can be registered in one state and sold in another. The Health Ministry may be planning a single centrlized system for the registration of all drugs under CDSCO.  The new system may not have much of a bearing on export quality, as drugs sold in the global market are subject to the regulations of the buyer country. The US/Europe deploy vast resources to make pharma adhere to their own standards while poorer nations like Gambia often rely on lists and inputs from the World Health Organization.  Even if drug registration is centralized, the regulation for manufacturing will be decentralized. A plant is jointly inspected by CDSCO and state regulators, but regular auditing is done by state authorities. India nrrfd greater accountability at the manufacturer level to adhere to norms.  Along with tighter regulation of manufacturing there needs to be a national policy on drug recall.
