Governor H.R. Bhardwaj on Monday alleged that officers in the Lokayukta were being gradually transferred and old cases “whitewashed” taking advantage of the vacuum in the premier investigation agency in the State.

Speaking to presspersons at Raj Bhavan after conferring doctorate degrees on two eminent scientists, the Governor maintained that the standoff between him and Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda on the appointment of Lokayukta had not created any constitutional crisis.

Sticking to his stand that the Government suggest a person of impeccable integrity to the post, Mr. Bhardwaj said that leaders of the Opposition Siddaramaiah (Assembly) and Motamma (Council), as well as the presiding officers of the two Houses, K.G. Bopaiah (Assembly) and D.H. Shankaramurthy (Council) had recommended the name of a retired judge of the Supreme Court also, but the Government was insisting on S.G. Bannurmath.

Mr. Bannurmath, he said, should volunteer to reject the offer.

‘Select retired Supreme Court Judge'

He said that six or seven Supreme Court judges had retired and one of them could be selected.

He hoped that Mr. Gowda, who was busy with the Legislative Council bypoll, would attend to this important work after December 22.

Requesting the media not to attribute motives to his utterances on the issue, Mr. Bhardwaj said he was worried about officers in the Lokayukta being transferred and old cases “whitewashed” as the post of Lokayukta is vacant.

To a question on the memorandum the BJP leaders were going to present to President Pratibha Patil seeking his recall, Mr. Bhardwaj said they were free to do that.

Appointing a wrong person to the post was worse than not having a Lokayukta at all, he said and added that he was worried about the developments and that Karnataka should improve.

Instead of sending one name, let the Chief Minister send a panel of names. The Governor termed all these as pressure tactics and said he would not give in.

‘Let the Government send a panel of names'
I won't succumb to pressure tactics: Bhardwaj
