The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested four persons from the Goaltore area of West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district late on Sunday for their alleged involvement in the killing of nine residents of Netai village in a firing incident on January 7.

These are the first arrests made by the CBI after it took over the case from the State's Criminal Investigation Department on February 22 acting on a Calcutta High Court directive. The total number of arrests in the case now stands at eight.

A senior CBI official told TheHindu here on Monday that the four persons — Raju Roy, Pintu Roy, Gandhibaran Roy and Swapan Roy — were arrested from Sasabera village in Goaltore and they confessed to have opened fire on villagers.

Six detained

The official added that six other persons have also been detained from the Goaltore, Jambani and Garbeta regions of the district.

“We are verifying the level of involvement of the six persons and are likely to arrest them soon as according to our investigations so far, they were also present in the house at Netai from where villagers were shot at,” the official added.

The arrested were produced before Jhargram's additional chief judicial magistrate and were remanded in judicial custody till March 18. An identification parade of the accused will be done in Jhargram on March 17 where eye-witnesses of the Netai incident will be brought to identify the assailants.

It has been repeatedly claimed by the villagers that armed CPI(M) ‘harmads' had set up a camp at local CPI(M) leader Rathin Dandapat's house from where they opened fire on January 7.

“There were two types of people in the camp — local CPI (M) leaders whom the villagers could identify and about 22 outsiders about whom neither the villagers nor the State police had any clue. It is a big achievement for us that we could track down 10 of them within such a short time,” the official said.

The CBI sleuths are hopeful about extracting the names of other local CPI(M) leaders who were behind the incident the senior official also did not rule out the possibility of arresting more ‘harmads'allegedly camping at neighbouring Birknar.
