The CBI is planning to book five senior BSP leaders for their alleged involvement in the Rs 10,000-crore National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam ahead of the UP polls. Sources said the agency is set to register at least 10 more cases.

"The enquiry has revealed that in several projects related to health and welfare departments of UP, several BSP leaders, including MLAs and MLCs, had connived with private contractors and had fudged the tenders," a source said. CBI officials, however, refused to disclose the names of `errant' leaders before registering the cases.

Earlier, the agency had filed five cases and arrested six people, besides questioning Babu Singh Kushwaha and Anant Mishra - former cabinet ministers in the Mayawati-led government.

Kushwaha is also one of the main accused in one of the FIRs where the contract for upgrading 134 district hospitals was given to a private firm at his `instance', leading to heavy losses. Kushwaha is likely to be questioned again soon.

The irregularities that led to the murder of two UP CMOs - Dr VK Arya and Dr B P Singh - and followed by the suspicious death of deputy CMO Y S Sachan are also being probed by the CBI.

Meanwhile, a Ghaziabad court sent three more accused in the scam to 14-day judicial custody on Saturday. Naresh Grover, an engineer in UP Jal Nigam; Kartar Singh, a clerk in the health department and R K Singh, who owns a medical store and also works in the health department, were presented before special CBI judge A K Singh who sent them to judicial custody till January 27.
