Continuing its grilling of corporate honchos, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday questioned at least seven of them in connection with its ongoing probe into the 2G spectrum scam.

The CBI called R.K. Krishna Kumar, who heads the Tata Realty and Infrastructure Private Ltd., to its headquarters here and quizzed him for nearly six hours. Mr. Kumar is also a board member of Tata Sons.

Tata Realty Managing Director Sanjay Ubale was also called for questioning by the agency as it sought explanations from them about a loan of Rs.1,700 crore given to real estate company Unitech in 2008, official sources said here.

The CBI suspects Unitech to be one of the major beneficiaries of the allotment of 2G spectrum during the tenure of the ex Telecom Minister, A. Raja, who is lodged in Delhi's Central Tihar jail.

The sources said that after securing the loan from Tata Realty, Unitech had applied for its mobile network licence in 2008.

The agency suspects that the real estate arm of the Tata group may have been acting as a front for Tata Teleservices which had already been given a licence for providing mobile services.

Tata Realty and Infrastructure Limited (TRIL) is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Tata Sons and serves as a real estate and infrastructure development arm.

The CBI also questioned Dilip Modi of Spice, Shankaran and Shamik Das of S Tel Private Limited, V. Srinivasan of Shiva group of companies which is the promoter of S Tel, and Sandeep Basu of Loop Telecom.
