The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has decided to purchase stocks from farmers, who have been on a warpath for two months demanding a higher support price for their crop.

Sources said bowing to pressure from farmers and political parties, the Union government cleared the decks for launching purchase centres by CCI in the state. Field-level officials at CCI, however, are still wary about the arrival of poor quality of stocks and made it clear that they would pick up the stocks only if they are fit as per their norms.

Initially, CCI would open 30 procurement centres across Guntur, Krishna, Nalgonda, Prakasam and Khammam districts. "We are ready to pick up the stocks provided the farmers get good quality cotton," CCI DGM S K Panigrahi told TOI on Monday. With prices going down in the open market, the farmers in some of the Telangana districts had resorted to protests and violent agitations. Panigrahi said the CCI prices would not be less than Rs 3,000 per quintal.

Meanwhile, TDP leaders Devineni Umamaheswara Rao and Dhullipalla Narendra Kumar staged a dharna in front of the CCI office here on Monday demanding the CCI to step in immediately to save the farmers. They wondered how the prices of cotton had gone down in the domestic market when the prices in the international markets were soaring high.

Nearly 74 lakh bales of cotton was produced in Andhra Pradesh during the current season against 50 lakh bales last year. The Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has decided to purchase stocks from farmers, who have been on a warpath for two months demanding a higher support price for their crop.
