Censoring the Internet would be disastrous: Hillary Clinton

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday said at the Ministerial Conference on Internet Freedom at The Hague in Netherlands that a regulation on internet in some countries has made an environment where ideas are being blocked and conversations are being stifled.

Clinton cited the examples of Syria, Iran and recently Russia where bloggers and internet activists are being targeted. Without naming India, she said that some governments are trying to make regulations on internet, which will restrict the diameter of the internet, obstruct free flow of information and would have disastrous consequences for all.

"It will make the internet diminshed for all of us. Internet is the a medium which is not competitive. When more people are added to it, the more valuable the network becomes," she added, at the conference being hosted by Google's executive Chairman Eric Schmidt.

"More than a billion people are using the internet in repressive countries. When companies sell surveillance equipment to Syria or Iran or in the past to Gaddafi, there can be no doubt they will be used for repression," she said.

Clinton's statement comes a day after India's Minister for Communications and IT Kapil Sibal had said he would move to frame guidelines to regulate content on internet. Sibal's statements provoked Google to issue a statement that it won't take down controversial content, if it is not illegal.

"People should be free to exercise their rights in a city square, as well as a chat room. We have to make sure human rights are as respected online, as offline," Clinton added.

Talks between Sibal and US based companiesb such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft failed this week. The internet firms declined to take down content, which Sibal termed 'objectionable.'

India has about 121 million internet users, being the third largest internet market in the world. China is the largest web market with about 485 million users, followed by US with 245 million users, as per IWS, a firm which keeps a tab on internet statistics.

US Companies such as Google and Facebook have suffered heavy censorship in China, which leaves India as the next big uncensored emerging market for e-commerce.
