Census 2011: Mumbai's sex ratio is worst in Maharashtra

The country's financial hub, which overshot the capital in per capita income this year, cannot boast of any achievement where its women are concerned. Mumbai seems to prefer its men to women in all age categories, according to the provisional Census 2011 figures released on Friday.

Mumbai's per capita income is currently poised at a healthy Rs 1.25 lakh, but it has emerged as the worst performer in Maharashtra in terms of its male-female balance, with only 838 women per 1,000 men. Its suburban areas come second from the bottom at 857, lagging even backward districts such as Gadchiroli, Beed and Osmanabad. Meanwhile, the child sex ratio in the city has fallen from 922 in 2001 to a dismal 874 in 2011, well below the national average of 914. Social experts blame the decline in the child sex ratio on growing consumerism.

"With affluence and medical technological advances, comes the power to determine sex. While people are driven in the economic race, they don't bother about socio-ethical aspects such as sex selection," said women's activist Sonya Gill. "People want a smaller family, which inadvertently becomes boy-oriented following myths that 'he' earns while 'she' is a burden." Activists blame the "total contempt of law" for the status quo. "The law against sex selection has existed in Maharashtra for over two decades, but there is no hope for a girl child to be born unless it is implemented in letter and spirit," said girl child activist Sabu George.

The grim findings might have one silver lining, though. Females have shown a higher growth in number than males in the state since the past decade, bringing the overall sex ratio from 922 to 925 females per 1,000 males since the previous Census.
