Agriculture Ministry reviews soil health card scheme

New Delhi: Central teams will be sent to Uttar Pradesh and Odisha to assess drought situation, the Agriculture Ministry said on Tuesday.

The Ministry said it had received representations from the two States and teams were being dispatched immediately.

Karnataka was recently sanctioned 1,540 crore. For Chhattisgarh, the Ministry has recommended 1,387 crore.

At present, Central teams are visiting Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, a release issued after a review meeting held by Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said and urged other affected States to make representations promptly.

Soil health cards

West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh are lagging in issuing soil heath cards, Singh said here after the review meeting, attended by Agricultural Production Commissioners and Principal Secretaries of State governments.

The issues under review included soil health cards, organic farming, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (irrigation scheme), the National Agricultural Market and the drought situation. Singh said the soil health card scheme had to be executed by the State governments and its agriculture machinery and institutions.

“The State government of Karnataka has started no work in this scheme and has been directed to do so immediately,” he said. He also reviewed the preparations to celebrate World Soil Day on December 5.

Irrigation scheme

With regard to the irrigation scheme, the Ministry noted the “physical achievements” made by Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.”

However, West Bengal has unspent balance for the past four years, the release said. Also, Himachal Pradesh and North-Eastern States have not taken the Central share in view of the 50:50 funding pattern. They were told that the pattern has been modified to 60:40 for States and 90:10 for the North-Eastern States. “Hence, they should take the Central share immediately,” the Ministry said.

The national agri market proposal of Gujarat has been sanctioned. Proposals have also been received from Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand, the Ministry said.
