Akhil Gogoi was associated with the CPI(M-L) in Assam, but had no links with Maoists, sources here said today, while raising questions whether an Assam police officer was transferred for not trumping up charges against the RTI activist.

The mystery of police action and subsequent allegations by one other than the chief minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, against Akhil are seen with suspicion in New Delhi.

On Thursday, former home secretary G.K. Pillai had told The Telegraph that there was no evidence to suggest Gogoi was linked to Naxals, even though the Maoists have made inroads into that state.

Today, more questions were raised, threatening to pull out some skeletons from the Assam government’s cupboard. Was a senior police officer in Assam transferred because he refused to trump up charges against the RTI activist?

A senior inspector-general of police was among the half-a-dozen officers who were transferred earlier this week by the Tarun Gogoi government.

Intelligence agencies here have said the police officer was transferred after he failed to find any evidence to suggest that Akhil had Maoist links and refused to take action on the basis of “existing” evidence.

“That officer’s subordinates had done considerable groundwork to find more details about the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) general secretary, but nothing had been found against him,” said a government source, adding that Akhil was indeed associated with the CPI(M-L). “But being member of, or being associated with CPI(M-L) does not mean being linked to Maoists,” the source added.

Akhil had led a large group of picketers, protesting against the government’s eviction drive in the Guwahati hills, on June 22. Three persons, including a nine-year-old boy, were killed in police firing after the protesters went on a rampage.

A government-appointed committee is to submit an inquiry report on the incident shortly.

Meanwhile, Assam civil society groups’ protests were picked up earlier this week by various other organisations like the People’s Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR), Campaign for Peace and Democracy and the Stree Adhikar Sangathan under the banner of National Alliance for People’s Movement. Asked about the Centre’s role in the entire affair, a senior official said North Block had nothing to do with it and thus, there was no communication with Dispur on the matter.

An Assam government official however, told The Telegraph in Guwahati today: “We still maintain that the KMSS has links with the Maoists, something which the special branch had informed the intelligence bureau soon after we arrested six persons for alleged Maoist links in Dhemaji in January, which was followed by the arrest of three youths from Orissa in February. We don’t know why the home ministry is dismissing these reports.”
