NEW DELHI: Brazil has offered to do "captive farming" of pulses to meet the growing demand in India. Responding to the offer, the consumer affairs ministry is now preparing a detailed proposal.

Consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Paswan said that the offer came when he met ministers from Brazil during his visit to the the country. "They are ready to grow pulses for us. We need to provide the required seed and they will do the cultivation after conducting tests of our seeds. Rather than going to different countries for pulses, we can depend on one," he said.

Already New Delhi has signed an MoU with the Mozambique government to increase the import of pulses from the African nation.

"Our main effort is to increase domestic production so that we won't depend on other countries. We have assured to procure pulses at minimum support price that they will produce. Now we are buying at market rate," Paswan said.
