BHOPAL: Challenging the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines, which are used during polling to verify that the vote cast by a person goes to the correct candidate, would land a person in jail, if it is found that the machine is working fine. The issue has come to light as the election commission is planning to make the people in MP aware of the machine ahead of the assembly elections next year. A special training vehicle would be used for the purpose.

VVPAT is a machine that provides feedback to voters. It is an independent verification printer machine and is attached to electronic voting machines. It allows voters to verify if their vote has gone to the intended candidate. VVPAT was in news in MP after a video allegedly showing an EVM giving out only BJP slips went viral. The video was of a reported dummy test in Bhind of voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) EVM for the bypoll in Ater on April 9. The election commission sought a report in this regard, and top officers of the district had to face the music.

MP joint chief electoral officer SS Bansal said that if a voter comes out of polling booth and gives a declaration that his vote did not go to the party or person he voted for, presiding officers can check the machine in presence of party agents. If it is confirmed that the machine is working fine, the voter who gave declaration that machine was not working properly will be handed over to police, whereas, if his claim is found to be correct, the voting in that polling booth would be stopped and error will be rectified.

When a voter presses button in the EVM, a paper slip is printed through the VVPAT. The slip contains the poll symbol and name of the candidate. It allows the voter to verify his or her choice. After being visible to a voter from a glass case in the VVPAT for seven seconds, the ballot slip will be cut and dropped into the drop box in the VVPAT machine and a beep will be heard. VVPAT machines can be accessed by polling officers only. VVPAT machines were introduced following protest by opposition parties against EVMs without paper trail units after the UP polls.
