Taking a strong view against operators who have failed to self-certify their base transceiver stations mounted on mobile towers, Minister of State for Communications and IT Sachin Pilot on Monday asked the Department of Telecommunications to conduct random checks of all BTS for electromagnetic radiation and impose a fine on those found violating the norms.

While talking to The Hindu, Mr. Pilot said there would be no further extension of deadline and Telecom Engineering and Resource Monitoring Cells of DoT has been asked to conduct nationwide checks to ensure compliance of UN-mandated and WHO-approved radiation norms.

“The government is very sensitive to the issue of electromagnetic radiation emitting from mobile towers. Parliamentarians, NGOs, and civil society have been raising the question of radiation. We have decided to act firmly on the issue which is directly related to the health of our citizens. Therefore, any operator or service provider found guilty of emitting radiation above prescribed norm will have to pay a penalty of Rs. 5 lakh per tower.”

Informing that of a total of over 5.6-lakh BTS only 4.16-lakh have been self-certified till date, the Minister said owners of the remaining BTS would be punished.
