Claiming that the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides destroyed Punjab in the two decades, volunteers from Punjab - once an agri-role model-have cautioned Madhya Pradesh against the same.

These volunteers from Kheti Virasat Mission - a group of volunteer activists from different fields working in Punjab for promoting organic farming, said this while participating in Vikalp Mela as part of Bhopal gas tragedy's 30th anniversary events in city.

Part of the group Ajay Tripathi a chemist by profession told news18 that after around 15 years of Green Revolution's ill affects started to take toll heavily on Punjab. "Around 1995-96, the cancer cases surged in Punjab like anything due to chemical infested food, especially in women as fat pockets are there more in their bodies which accumulated the chemicals in large quantities," Tripathi said.

Cancer cases have risen so much so a train which runs from Abohar to Bikaner is now known as Cancer train. "Unlike passenger train this train has special sleeper coaches especially for carrying cancer patients to Bikaner, where they get free treatment at Acharya Tulsi Charitable Hospital, the volunteers claimed.

Narrating the plight of the people in Punjab, Tripathi claimed that besides cancer cases infertility has risen so much that it is threatening the existence of the society there. Besides miscarriages have shown alarming rise in the state especially in young girls, he said.

The chemical farming has deposited uranium below the ground level and hardly any village potable water and people survive on ROs everywhere, Tripathi said.

The situation is so bad that there were instances where the entire village was up for sale as people wanted to leave the contaminated environs at any cost. These villages included Harkisnapura in Bhatinda in 2002, Malsinghwala in 2005 and Mullanpur Sandharsi in patiayala in 2010, the volunteers claimed.

The green revolution also destroyed multiple crop system in the State as only three criops-wheat, rice and cotton are grown there. Besides the green revolution introduced water centric crop rice in Punjab and as a result large pockets in state's Malwa region have lost all the water they had turning into barren land.

"Prior to green revolution, Punjab grew and consumed over 60 crops which also offered sufficient nutrients required for the body which is not the case now," group's mentor Sardar Rashpal Singh said.

The group had started its activities in 1997-98 and formally undertook the task against chemical farming in 2005 after establishing a trust Thankfully having the seen the disastrous chemical farming the locals in Punjab are more than willing for organic farming.

Young generation is also getting associated with the campaign, claimed group member and PhD scholar Lanveen Bhagi. We have seen the devastating chemical farming so we wish to bring changes, he added.

The scholar however cautioned Madhya Pradesh. "MP is also running fast on Punjab's way by aiming agri-growth through chemical farming and people here should wake up unless it's too late," he suggested.

When told that MP has 40% area certified for organic farming, Bhagi said that certified area does not mean that intrusion of chemicals is ensured at any cost.
