In his maiden visit to Naxal-hit Chhattisgarh, President Pranab Mukherjee today praised the "young state" for its all-round development.

Asserting that Chhattisgarh has a rich legacy of one of the oldest panchayati raj systems, he said it has emerged as one of the fastest developing states in the country.

"This young state has registered all round development on many fronts and made its presence felt at the national level," he said in his address on the conclusion of 12th Rajyotsava (statehood) celebrations here.

Chhattisgarh was formed on November 1, 2000. It was earlier a part of Madhya Pradesh.

Mukherjee praised Chhattisgarh's new administrative capital Naya Raipur and complimented the state leadership for its vision and commitment to sustainable development.

"I am delighted to know that Naya Raipur is the first planned capital city of 21st century in India and is being developed as a modern and green city.

"Special features such as rain water harvesting and harvesting of solar energy have been included to make it eco-friendly. Comfort and security to the citizens are being ensured through dedicated bus lanes, cycle tracks, pedestrian pathways and barrier free movement," he said highlighting some of the features of the new city developed in 8,000 hectare area and about 20 km from capital Raipur.

Mukherjee, who is on a two-day visit to the state, also inaugurated a state-of-the-art new secretariat building here.

He expressed happiness over his first visit to the state saying it gave him "an opportunity to meet a cross section of the vibrant literary and academic communities of this new and fast growing state".

Praising the state's natural beauty, Mukherjee said Chhattisgarh is gifted with deposits of minerals such as iron ore, aluminium, bauxite, tin, coal and diamonds.

"It is heartening to know that Chhattisgarh is attracting tourists from different parts. It has beautiful waterfalls such as Chitrakote and Tirathgarh," he said.

He recalled that Swami Vivekananda had spent several years of his childhood in Raipur.

"The largest period of his life after Kolkata was spent in Raipur. The great poet Rabindranath Tagore stayed in Pendra with his wife Mrinalini for few months.

"While waiting for the train, he wrote a beautiful poem at Bilaspur railway station (depicting life of a porter and his wife) which is proudly displayed there," Mukherjee said.

Chhattisgarh has large number of followers of two great saints, namely Sant Kabir and Guru Baba Ghasidas who have enlightened us with their profound spiritual wisdom, he said.

According to Mukherjee, Chhattisgarh is not only located at the heart of the country in geographical terms but also embodies the best of Indian culture, heritage and traditions as well as its natural beauty.

"I take this opportunity to congratulate all the prominent persons from different walks of life who have been felicitated for their important contributions in their respective fields.

"It shows that talent is abundant in Chhattisgarh which reflects its vibrant and dynamic society," he said.

Mukherjee congratulated the people of the state on the occasion of Rajyotsava and hoped that "Chhattisgarh will continue to live up to the expectations of the nation and march ahead by attending to the needs of all sections of its people especially the poorest of the poor".

The city was decked up in colourful lights and artistes wearing traditional dress were seen dancing and singing songs to welcome the president.

Chhattisgarh Governor Shekhar Dutt and Chief Minister Raman Singh among others were present during the function.

In his address, Singh highlighted the state's growth on agriculture and economic fronts.

Mukherjee will tomorrow visit tribal area Narayanpur, one of the Naxal-hit districts, to lay the foundation stone of two 500-seater hostels for students of backward class there.
